Stetson Bennett Wins Manning Award

Stetson Bennett will need to make room for another award after leading the Georgia Bulldogs to their 2nd straight national championship. He was named the winner of the Manning Award on Monday. According the article, the award goes to the nation’s top quarterback as judged by the Sugar Bowl and considers bowl performances.

According to dawgnation.com, Archie Manning made the announcement.

“We started the Manning Award 19 years ago as a way to recognize the country’s top quarterback for the full season, including the postseason,” Archie Manning said. “I’m not sure we’ve ever had an honoree who showcased his ability and proved his worth all the way through the postseason like Stetson did this year. We’re thrilled to recognize him as this year’s Manning Award winner. On behalf of the entire Manning family, I want to again thank the Sugar Bowl Committee for its long-standing support of the Manning Award. The Bowl’s role in making this possible each year is greatly appreciated.”

Last night marked the 8th time a Georgia HS QB has started in the CFB National Championship. It was all Stetson Bennett, passing for over 300 yards in the Dawgs over 65-7 win over TCU.

Coach Kirby Smart shared his emotions with dawgnation.com after the game.

“Sometimes it takes a loss to galvanize, put your team in a spot to win. It did that last year,” Smart said. “And it didn’t take that. I always tell guys, do you have to take a loss to learn? Why? Like, it doesn’t take that to learn that. And this team is special because they didn’t have a flaw.”

According to the article, the 2019 LSU team and the 2018 Clemson team are the only other teams to go 15-0 in the College Football Playoff era. Smart was the defensive coordinator on the 2009 Alabama team that went unbeaten, but the Crimson Tide went 14-0.

Following the game, defensive tackle Jalen Carter and defensive back Kelee Ringo both announced that they will enter the NFL draft.
