Edgefield and North Augusta Among the Safest Cities in South Carolina

Edgefield tops the list of the 20 safest cities in South Carolina, according to home security and safety website, Safewise.com.  Overall, the state's safest cities in the state have crime rates well below national averages, yet officials say there's more crime statewide in the Palmetto state than the rest of the country.

Besides Edgefield, North Augusta also made the list of the 20 safest cities in South Carolina.

According to the report, violent crime in South Carolina went up last year by more than 5%, while property crime continued on a downward trend.

Safewise.com reports that aggravated assault was the most common violent crime in the state, making up about 79% of all reported incidents.  That's 13% higher than the national average.

The top 20 safest cities in South Carolina, according to the report are:  Edgefield, Bluffton, Walhalla, Fort Mill, Mount Pleasant, Isle of Palms, Hanahan, Tega Cay, central, Port Royal, Clemson, Mauldin, Lexington, Clover, North Augusta, Surfside Beach, Charleston, Conway, Summerville and Greer.
