Aiken County Sheriff Michael Hunt Announces He Won’t Seek Re-Election

Aiken County Sheriff's Office

Aiken County Sheriff Michael Hunt announced today he will not seek re-election when this term ends next year.

Hunt has been sheriff of Aiken County since 2003 when he won a special election.  He then ran unopposed when he sought his first full term in office.

In announcing his retirement at the end of this term, Hunt also endorsed Aiken Public Safety Captain Marty Sawyer, who announced plans today to run for sheriff in 2024.

A crowd gathered outside the Aiken County Courthouse this afternoon to hear both announcements.

Sawyer, who has had a lengthy career in law enforcement, said that if elected, he will focus on serving and protecting the community as well as curbing gang violence.
