It was nice while it lasted.  Motorists in Georgia will see gas prices go back up Tuesday, January 10.  That's when the state's gas tax suspension ends.

Governor Brian Kemp had suspended the state gas tax last March to help provide some relief from high gas prices as a result of inflation and natural disasters in neighboring states that led to an increase in pump prices.

Although Kemp extended the order suspending the state's gas tax 7 times, he said "We can't continue to do what we're doing with gas taxes.  This was always intended as a short-term answer."

Kemp says he will now look to the legislature to help provide tax relief to Georgians in other ways.

During his recent re-election campaign, Kemp pledged to push for an additional $1 billion state income tax rebate on top of the $1.6 billion tax rebate Georgia lawmakers approved this year.  He is also asking lawmakers to approve $1 billion in property tax rebates.

Despite prices going up in Georgia on Tuesday, the state still has some of the lowest fuel prices in the country.
