Aiken Public Safety Officer Fired for Use of Excessive Force

The Aiken Department of Public Safety has fired one of its own following allegations he used excessive force during a recent arrest.

Officer Anthony Mason is accused in the January 3 incident that took place at the scene of a traffic accident on Pine Log Road at Two Notch Road.

A news release from authorities says Mason reported smelling what he thought was marijuana coming from one of the vehicles.  Mason told the driver he was going to search the vehicle, but the driver said he wasn't giving his consent and took off on foot.

Authorities say once the driver surrendered, Mason allegedly hit him over the head when he reportedly resisted arrest.

Following an investigation, Mason has been terminated from the department.  The case has been turned over to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division for further investigation.  It's possible criminal charges will be filed.
