Possible Tornado Touchdown in Burke County
It’s possible a tornado touched down in Burke County this morning, according to the Burke County Sheriff’s Office.
A line of heavy thunderstorms rolled through the CSRA until about 11:00 a.m. Wind gusts of up to 60 mph were expected with heavy rainfall. After 10 a.m., the National Weather Service issued tornado warnings for Aiken, Edgefield and Saluda counties, with one possibly spotted in Edgefield County near Highway 23. Just before 11 a.m. a tornado was spotted in Wagener.
Burke County authorities also reported a possible tornado touchdown near the Richmond County line. Trees were reported down across several roads, some on houses and on power lines. No injuries were reported. The Burke County Sheriff’s Office says the Story Mill, Greiner, Highway 25, McManus, Allen and Old Waynesboro Road areas appeared to have been the hardest hit. Burke County EMA and the Burke County Sheriff’s Office are working to clear storm debris from roadways and assess damage.
A tornado watch remains in effect for the CSRA until 2 p.m. today.
