Burke County Football Coach Announces Retirement
Longtime Burke County head football coach Eric Parker announced today he is retiring, two months after he collapsed on the sidelines during his team’s football game against Wayne County November 1.
Parker was airlifted to a hospital in Savannah where officials confirmed he had a heart attack.
This morning, Parker issued a statement on his Facebook page saying, “Thank you Burke County for allowing me to be your Head Football Coach for 16 years! This morning I stepped down from that position and I am retiring. Rashann and I are blessed to have been involved with such a great community. Man! We had a time!”
Parker led Burke County’s football program for 16 years. He coached at Lucy C. Laney High School for 10 seasons prior to that.
Burke County Superintendent Dr. Angela Williams posted on Twitter, “Coach Parker is leaving some big shoes to fill. He has been an excellent leader and mentor to our students on and off the field. One of the best ways we can honor him is by keeping our program moving forward. We will begin our search for a new head coach immediately.”
