Mayor-elect Garnett Johnson Sworn into Office Today

Garnett Johnson took the oath of office this morning to become Augusta's 85th mayor.  The mayor-elect will not, however, take office until January 1.

Johnson won a runoff election in June, defeating Richmond County Tax Commissioner Steven Kendrick, to become Augusta's next mayor.  The term-limited Mayor Hardie Davis will leave office December 31.

After the swearing-in ceremony in the Lee Beard Commission Chamber at the Municipal Building, Johnson told the crowd in attendance he's not afraid of hard work or challenges.  "I want all residents to know that my administration will be open and here for you.  I look forward to working to bring positive change to the city.  It's time for us to unite for the greater good of Augusta and this region."

Jasmine Sims, associate vice president for workforce solutions at the Augusta Metro Chamber of Commerce, will serve as Johnson's chief of staff.  Brennan Meagher, program director at Augusta Locally Grown, will serve as communications and community liaison.
