North Augusta Woman Charged in Daughter’s Death

A North Augusta woman was taken into custody Monday in connection with the death of her 6-month-old child there in late October.

The Department of Public Safety says officers responded to a report of an unresponsive infant at a home in the 1900 block of Green Forest Drive October 27.

When they arrived, officers said one of the adults in the home was doing CPR on the child.  Thirty-six-year-old Brittany Matthews told authorities she had put her baby down for a nap, but found her unresponsive later.  Matthews' called her mother, Debra Markwalter, into the room and she told authorities the baby was in a position that would make it difficult to breathe.

Following an investigation, Matthews was taken into custody Monday and charged with Homicide by Child Abuse.  The arrest warrant states that Matthews had ingested some meth and/or fentanyl within close proximity to the baby, causing her to ingest a small amount of fentanyl that led to her death.
