SC National Guard Soldier from Aiken Killed in Accident in Kuwait
A man employed by the James Brown Arena has died while responding to a reported gas leak in the facility around 7:15 last night.
Patrons who had already arrived for the 8 p.m. Charlie Wilson & Friends concert were evacuated from the facility.
Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen says 66-year-old Rex Broadwater of Hephzibah was pronounced dead at the scene about an hour later. He had reportedly been working on a leak coming from an HVAC unit.
A statement from the James Brown Arena said, "It is with deep sadness that we report the passing of one of our employees due to an accident occurring at the James Brown Arena just prior to tonight's Charlie Wilson & Friends show. We have canceled the concert, and we are cooperating with local authorities as they conduct their investigation. Out of respect and care for our employee and the employee's family, we are unable to comment any further at this time. Ticketholders will be contacted directly regarding refunds."
