http://gty.im/1244639958 Georgia House Speaker David Ralston died today following an extended illness.  He was 68 years old.   He was the second-longest serving speaker in the state's history.

Ralston, from Blue Ridge, served in the Georgia State Senate from 1992 to 1998.  He was first elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 2002.  He became Georgia's 73rd Speaker of the House in 2010, but did not seek nomination to continue in that role for the upcoming legislative session, saying he had a "health challenge."

Republicans had just nominated State Representative Jon Burns to become the next speaker earlier this week.  Speaker Pro Tempore Jan Jones of Milton will take over the remainder of the term as House Speaker.

Governor Brian Kemp has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in Ralston's honor through his internment.  That date hasn't been announced.  His body will also lie in state in the State Capitol.
