According to government data, an estimated 3.08 million middle and high school students reported using a tobacco product in the last month.
That sounds like a lot, and it is, but it's down from the 4.47 million in 2020 and the 6.2 million in 2019. Doing the math, about one in nine teenagers are currently using tobacco products.
The most common product, e-cigarettes. Leading the category for the ninth straight year. The second most popular product, cigars, with 500,000 smoking them. 440,000 teens are smoking cigarettes.
Cigarette smoking has been declining, steadily, over the last twenty years. Although the CDC cautioned against comparing the results of previous years due to the change in collecting data due to the pandemic.
The study was based on an annual national survey that took place from January to May this year, which showed that nearly 11.3% of all students had used a tobacco product in the last month,
