A Columbia County man was sentenced today to five years behind bars for selling drugs to a Grovetown man that led to his death.

The Columbia County Sheriff's Office began an investigation after Alex King died July 19, 2020 from an overdose after taking pills that had been laced with fentanyl.

District Attorney Bobby Christine announced that an indictment was issued for Colin Magill of Martinez, who sold the pills to King.  Magill's family wanted authorities to pursue felony murder charges against Magill, but he was allowed instead to plead guilty to a lesser charge of Distribution of Schedule II Drugs.

Judge Sheryl Jolly sentenced Magill today to five years in jail, followed by 20 years probation.
