State Epidemiologist Dr. Linda Bell said the child was from the Midlands region, but no other information was released.
There have been three flu-related deaths so far this season in South Carolina and two were Midlands residents.
Flu can circulate any time of the year, but Bell said flu season typically begins in early October and can run through May.
Health officials say this could be a severe flu season. They urge everyone to get a flu shot, especially those 65 and over, young children, and those with underlying medical conditions.
DHEC officials say the flu vaccine is available from many providers, including DHEC health departments, doctor's offices, clinics, pharmacies, schools and workplaces. Most insurance companies cover the cost of the vaccination. For those who have not had either of the two, health officials say it's safe to get the flu and COVID-19 vaccines at the same time.
