For the first time in nearly 10 years, Sam's Club membership fees have gone up.

A basic membership has jumped from $45 to $50, while Plus memberships have increased from $100 to $110.

Walmart-owned Sam's Club officials say "the company has invested in technology to improve the shopping experience by upgrading all 600 of its clubs."  Customers will be happy to know, however, when they renew their membership they'll get a credit that's equal to the increase for this year only.  "Sam's Cash," as it's called will amount to $5 for basic membership renewals, while Plus members will receive $10 in Sam's Cash.

Sam's Club competitor, Costco, says for now it has no plans to increase membership fees.  Its last increase came in 2017 when Gold Star and business memberships increased to $60, while executive membership fees increased to $120.

Sam's Club membership fee increases went into effect October 17.
