Russia's Ukraine War Echoes Finland Winter War

ROVANIEMI, FINLAND – MAY 23: Flowers in the blue and white of the Finnish flag lie at the tombstone of a soldier killed in the 1939-1940 Winter War at a Finnish war cemetery on May 23, 2022 in Rovaniemi, Finland. At the cemetery lie the graves of over 600 Finnish soldiers killed in the three wars Finland fought during World War II. The first, the Winter War, echoes similarities to Russia’s current war in Ukraine: in 1939 the Soviet Union, with an overwhelming advantage in tanks and aircraft, invaded non-threatening Finland, ostensibly on security grounds. The campaign initially faltered, leading to massive Soviet casualties in men and equipment. The Winter War ended in 1940, with both sides signing the Moscow Peace Treaty that ceded approximately 9% of Finnish territory to the Soviet Union. Today Finland, after decades of neutrality and alarmed by Russia’s war in Ukraine, is seeking to join the NATO military alliance. (Photo by Sean Gallup/Getty Images)

So, this morning on the show we told you the story of a man being arrested for defacing his ex-wife's grave.

Here's the story

Linda Torello passed away five years ago.  Beginning in April of this year, family members, visiting the grave began to notice deli bags of feces around the gravestone.  They passed it off as maybe a forgetful dog owner or walker.  But, when they found more bags later, they determined this was a much more serious situation.  They contacted the police, who took the report and told the family to let me know if it happens again.  It did, they reported it but nothing much happened.  That's when they decided to figure it out on their own.

They contacted the cemetery and they allowed the family to place security cameras around the area. And it worked! They found the man at the cemetery early in the morning at their mom's grave.

The Findings

Turns out, it was Dean Eichler.  Eichler was briefly married to Torello FIFTY YEARS AGO.  He left when she became pregnant and he didn't believe the child was his.  DNA testing proved him wrong.

No one in the family had spoken to Eichler since the mid 70's.

By the way, Eichler's current wife would accompany him on his trips to the cemetery, but she stayed in the car.

Clean Up

A hazmat company has been hired to remove all of the decorations soaked in urine and to have her headstone properly cleaned. In addition, some of the surrounding grass needs to be ripped up and replaced.

I know there's really no such thing as an amicable divorce, despite what Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin said.  But, to do this, fifty years later, that's not only holding on to a grudge, that's EMBRACING and HUGGING a grudge.
