Augusta University

A Celebration of Life service will be held Monday, September 12, for Dr. William A. Bloodworth, who died August 29 at the age of 79.

Bloodworth became president of Augusta College in 1993, which transformed into Augusta State University three years later.  During his tenure as president, the Summerville campus on Walton Way, saw many changes and much growth.  Allgood Hall and University Hall were constructed.  The Jaguar Student Activities Center opened in 2006 followed by the construction two years later of the Douglas Bernard Jr. Amphitheatre.  Bloodworth oversaw the construction of University Village, a student housing complex that opened on Damascus Road in 2005.  A golf pavilion at the Forest Hills campus was also added in 2005, with the opening two years later of the J. Fleming Norvell Collegiate Golf House.

When Bloodworth retired from the University as president in 2013, he returned a year later as a professor, teaching History and English.  In spite of illness, he continued teaching through this past spring.

A Celebration of Life Service is being held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Maxwell Theatre on the Summerville campus, 2500 Walton Way.  A reception for family and friends will follow the service.
