Movie tickets will be just $3 each in many U.S. theaters this weekend as part of National Cinema Day.

Labor Day weekend is traditionally one of the slowest weekends in theaters as Americans flock to outdoor-related events as the summer months wind down.

This Sunday, September 3, Cinema Foundation, a non-profit portion of the National Association of Theater Owners, says tickets will be discounted for the day at more than 3,000 theaters across the country.

"After this summer's record-breaking return to cinemas, we wanted to do something to celebrate moviegoing," said Cinema Foundation president Jackie Brenneman.  "We're doing it by offering a "thank you" to the moviegoers that made this summer happen and by offering an extra enticement for those who haven't made it back yet."

Major chains, including Regal Cinemas and AMC, will be selling tickets for no more than $3 for every showing, in every format this Sunday.
