According to NPR, the verdict is in on the month long trial for Brittney Griner on drug smuggling and possession charges.  It has been nearly six months since she was arrested at the Russian airport for cannabis in her luggage.

Griner has no been issued a sentence, yet.  She could face up to 10 years in prison.  The Biden Administration has been pressured to attempt negotiations for her release, but have not seen success.

The prosecution is requesting a sentence of 9 and a half years in prison.  Griner’s attorney is calling for acquittal, or for leniency.

Griner spoke in court, saying, “I made an honest mistake and I hope that in your ruling that it doesn’t end my life here.”

She has been detained in Russia for 24 weeks now.  While she says she must have put the cannabis in her bag by mistake, she does have a medical marijuana card in the state of Arizona.  But in Russia, any personal possession of cannabis is illegal.
