Phone scammer target area residents

The Aiken County Sheriff's Office says phone scammers are at it again and they don't want you to be caught off-guard.

Officials have received reports of callers trying to get money from residents by telling them they have missed jury duty or have outstanding fines that need to be paid immediately due to a pending warrant.

Callers tell the residents they are associated with the Aiken County Sheriff's Office and other governmental agencies to try to get money.  Officials remind you that Law Enforcement Agencies or Governmental Agencies never collect fines or fees over the phone.  Those should be paid either by mail or in person at the appropriate Clerk of Court Office.

Never give out personal information over the phone, and never agree to any payment over the phone for a company or agency you are not familiar with.

Direct any questions or information about suspects to the Aiken County Sheriff's Office at (803) 648-6811; Aiken Department of Public Safety at (803) 642-7620; North Augusta Department of Public Safety at (803) 279-2121; or Crime Stoppers at (888) CRIME-SC
