Phil Petty, who led the South Carolina Gamecock football team to two Outback Bowl wins has passed away. Petty was most recently coaching high school football at Gray Collegiate. Head coach Adam Holmes confirmed Petty’s death to The State Newspaper.
During his time at South Carolina, he led the team from a disastrous 0-11 season in 1999. Petty played 40 games for the Gamecocks across four seasons from 1998 to 2001.
He is survived by his wife and two children. The cause of death has not been determined.
