Lightning struck a training area at Fort Gordon late this morning as heavy thunderstorms moved through the area, leaving 10 soldiers injured.  Emergency responders were called to the scene at 11:10 a.m.

Fort Gordon Spokesperson Anne H. Bowman initially said no information was available on the conditions of those who were injured.

This evening, a statement from Bowman said, “It is with heavy heart Fort Gordon confirms one of the soldiers injured in the lightning strike this morning succumbed to their injuries.”

The soldier’s identity is being withheld pending notification of family members.

There’s still no information available on the conditions of the other nine soldiers.
