Human remains found during search for Simon Powell in Burke County

The search for the remains of Simon Powell has resumed today in Burke County.  Powell was 63-years-old when he went missing in June of 2016.  Authorities found his pickup truck the day after he was reported missing, but he was never found.

Last week, the Burke County Sheriff’s Office arrested 38-year-old Stacey Welch in connection with Powell’s kidnapping and murder, as well as armed robbery.  She never confessed to the crimes, but admitted she played a role in them.  Some information she provided led investigators to a wooded area and pond off Ponderosa Road last week.  A two-day search for Powell’s remains turned up nothing.

Today, Captain Jimmy Wylds says another pond on private property has been identified as a point of interest in the case.  The location is now considered a crime scene and won’t be disclosed at this time.  Wylds said, “Our focus is on finding the remains of Mr. Powell and bringing his family and friends closure.”
