Information obtained from a woman who was arrested earlier this week in connection with the disappearance and murder of a Burke County man led officials to search a remote area Thursday for his body.
Simon Powell’s body was never found after he disappeared in 2016 and the case had never been solved until new information surfaced recently.
The Burke County Sheriff’s Office arrested 38-year-old Stacey Welch and charged her with Powell’s kidnapping and murder. She’s also been charged with armed robbery.
Statements made by Welch earlier this week led officials to search an area at the end of Ponderosa Road in Waynesboro Thursday. They searched a pond until around 5:00 p.m., then resumed their search this morning.
