We've had plenty of days with temperatures in the 90's this summer, but the "feels like" temperature today will make it feel like it's 111 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.  Showers and thunderstorms are expected this afternoon with a high temperature of 94 degrees.  Showers and thunderstorms are expected again this evening.

The forecast is the same for Friday, with more showers and thunderstorms expected throughout the day.  Some storms could have strong, gusty winds.

With the extreme heat expected today, Lincoln County officials say they're opening a Cooling Center there today at the Recreation Center Gymnasium,  1962 Rowland York Drive in Lincolnton.

It will be open until 6:00 p.m. today.  No pets will be allowed.  No food will be served, but you can bring snacks, non-alcoholic beverages and folding chairs.  All visitors will be required to wear a mask while in the gym.

Cooling shelters remain open in Columbia and Richmond Counties.
