An Augusta woman was struck and killed on Jimmie Dyess Parkway this morning by a hit-and-run driver that is now in custody.

Captain Steve Morris of the Columbia County Sheriff's Office says Candice Fernsler of Belair Road was hit by a pickup truck while trying to cross Dyess Parkway in front of Dairy Queen around 10:00 a.m.  Fernsler died at the scene.

A witness followed the truck which headed east on I-20. The hit-and-run driver, identified as Daniel Blair Amos of Jackson, North Carolina, reportedly got off on the Wheeler Road exit, then got back on I-20 headed west. He was stopped on Lewiston Road near Kroger and taken into custody.  Blair was charged with hit and run, first degree vehicular homicide, and failure to obey a traffic control device.  He's being held in the Columbia County Detention Center.
