Now that the CDC has recommended wearing cloth protective face masks during the COVID-19 epidemic, people are wondering where to get them from.
Etsy is helping to increase the supply by rallying their creative troops to get out their sewing machines and get to work to make thousands of masks. On Friday (4/4), the same day the President recommended protective masks, Etsy sent a push notification to every craftsperson on its website in the U.S, calling all sellers to "start making face masks.”
Etsy said there was an average of one mask-related search on the site every two seconds in March.
Last week, more than 10,000 sellers sold at least one mask apiece.
Cloth masks can be quickly constructed by anyone with a sewing machine and some elastic and unlike medical-grade masks, they can be made quite easily. At this time, face masks are highlighted on Etsy's home page.
