Columbia County school students will get an extra 10 minutes of sleep when the new school year begins in August.
School board members voted to make start times 10 minutes later than in the past to allow the high schools to implement the new 7-period school day. Officials say the current transportation schedule needed to be adjusted to accommodate the increasing number of students in the school system.
Elementary schools will now start at 8:40 and end at 3:40; middle schools will start at 7:30 and end at 3:35; and high schools will begin at 7:35 and end at 2:45.
The only exception is Lakeside High School. They will start and stop five minutes later due to the traffic congestion between Lakeside Middle and Lakeside High.
